Devonport is located directly across the harbour from downtown Auckland. The trip by ferry takes around 12 minutes and delivers you to the esplanade, home of the grand Esplanade Hotel. Built in 1864, the North Shore landmark has deservedly reached iconic status.
Bearing witness to its fiery past, the volcanic cones of North Head and Mt. Victoria look down on the village, having last erupted 40, 000 years ago to create the land that Devonport now sits on. There are marvellous 360 degree views from the top of these cones.
Shops, cafes, art galleries, restaurants and museums make Devonport a very enjoyable day-out and all are within an easy stroll of the ferry terminal. Nearby Cheltenham Beach is a favourite among locals.
